Asakusa Kannon Temple is one of the most popular in Tokyo. Belonging to the Buddist Sho Kannon sect, it is dedicated to the Buddist goddess of Mercy. Originally said to be founded in 628, the main hall was rebuilt in 1958 following its destruction during World War II. The main entrance (pictured here) is called the Kaminari-Gate, with a 3.3m/10ft high paper lantern, weighing 100kg/200lb, bearing the inscription meaning "Thunder Gate". The Temple complex includes many seperate structures including a five storied pagoda, main temple and famous incense vat.
